The Church of the Holy Sepulchre

The church of the Byzantine phase was severely damaged in the Persian invasion of 614. In 810 large-scale repairs were carried out in the church when Charlemagne came to the the aid of Jerusalem under the leadership of the patriarch of Jerusalem, Thomas. In 1009 the church was once again destroyed by decree of caliph Hakim, to be repaired only in 1048 by Emperor Constantine IX Monomachus. The original Byzantine plan of the church was maintained until the Crusader period.
