The Kufic and Nashic Scripts

Islamic writing consists of two basic Arab scripts: the square Kufic and the cursive Nashic. The Nashic script was used for secular writings. The Kufic script includes several types of angular and square scripts, which were developed in the city of Kufa, south of Baghdad, in the seventh century CE. A type of Kufic script was used to write the Qur`an, and another was used in the monumental inscription in the Dome of the Rock. This artistic script has no diacritics. Another version of Kufic script has longish letters with ends adorned by leaves and half palmettes. This version first appeared in ninth century Egypt, and was applied to vessels and buildings in Eretz-Israel during the Tulunic period (835-969 CE).
