The Lower Aqueduct

This aqueduct meanders for 21 km through a series of rock cut conduits, pipes, tunnels and built sections until it reaches Jerusalem. It enters the city south of the present Jewish Quarter, where from it traverses Wilson's Arch into the Temple Mount. Water filled the vast complex of cisterns located under the pavements of the Temple Mount and served for both ritual purposes and for daily use. The construction of this aqueduct was a truly amazing feat of ancient engineering as the water left Solomon's Pools at 765 metres above sea level, entering the Temple Mount at 735 metres, a drop of only thirty metres over 21 kilometres!
