Modes of Decoration

courtesy of the Israel Museum, Jerusalem
The Dome of the Rock integrates several modes of decoration in a rich variety of techniques and colors. The motifs derive from the classical-Byzantine and Sassanian traditions, thus pronouncing the victory of Islamic power over its neighbors. Although the building underwent several changes and modifications, it is still close to its original plan and decorations, and is therefore an outstanding example of Early Islamic art, which emerged in the Umayyad period.
