The Yerushalmi (the Jerusalem Talmud) tells us that the Foundation Stone occupied the center of the temple since the days of the first prophets, and that before the construction of the temple, the Arc of the Covenant had rested on this stone (Jerusalem Talmud, Yomma, 5, 4).
