Cause of Uprisings

The massive gathering of pilgrims at the temple during the holidays sometimes gave rise to expectations for political changes and caused uprisings against the rulers - the Hasmoneans, Herod, the procurators or the Roman Caesar (Jewish Antiquities, Book 17, Chapter 9, 206 ff.). The Romans then found it necessary to increase the size of their troops and impose extensive security measures.
