Muslim Burial Traditions

Early in the Islamic period, burial traditions of Muslims resembled those of the Byzantine period. Only at a later stage did the Muslims bury their dead on an east-west axis, laying the deceased on his side with head facing Mecca (i.e., to the south). As Muslims usually did not bury in coffins and burial goods are rare, chronology of Muslim burials remains largely obscure.
