The Status of Jerusalem in Islamic Tradition
The rise of Islam put an end to the degradation of the Temple Mount, which had served during the Byzantine period (325-638 CE) as a dump. The dismantling of the Temple was held by the Christian rulers of Jerusalem as a sign of the fulfillment of Jesus' prophecy (Matthew 24, 2; Mark 13, 2; Luke 21, 6) that the Jewish temple would be razed. During the Islamic period this perception was replaced by the new religious concept that reconferred the Temple Mount once again as a holy place. |
