Cisterns and Pools

Besides the many cisterns on Temple Mount, each residence in the city owned a cistern, which was used to store rainwater. Nasir-i-Khusrau mentions the efficient drainage system of Jerusalem's streets. Al-Muqaddasi notes three reservoirs located within the city walls: the Pool of Israel, Sulayman's Pool and the Pool of 'Iyad; near each of the reservoirs a bathhouse was constructed. The Pool of Israel, located to the north of Temple Mount, was in use already during the Second Temple period. Sulayman's Pool is identified by Le Strange as the Bethesda Pools, which later served the Christian pilgrims during the Crusader period. Le Strange identifies the Pool of 'Iyad with Hezekia's Pool.
